Scuba Diving in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is known to be a tourist paradise with its peculiar wildlife and natural rainforests. Located in Central America, this place has also been a well-known resort for scuba diving. Most scuba divers prefer the northwestern part of the country for this recreational activity. Another popular location is the middle of the west coast of Costa Rica, which is near the city of San Jose. In order to get to the diving location, you would have to take an internal route through this city to reach your destination. The northwestern diving resort is easier to access as you may be able to get a direct flight to the area as it is near Liberia. Playas Del Coco, a small town near Liberia, is a very popular Scuba diving location. Experts at these locations can offer you some helpful advice on the diving and accommodation packages available in the hotels in the area.

Scuba diving in Costa Rica is distinct from the kind of diving you normally experience in the Caribbean. The dives are between 60 and 85 feet and the water currents are more or less steady. You will face visibility issues in this area due to the huge amounts of plankton in the water. The water is so dark at some spots that sunlight is not let through. However, the positive aspect of this is that large sea animals are attracted towards plankton and hence you do not miss out on this view while scuba diving. Other than the newer varieties of fish, even the fish that are typically found in the Caribbean reefs are much bigger in size in this locality. One example is that of the trumpet fish. The porcupine puffer fish is present in more abundant numbers here. There is an abundance of other fish present here as well.

The expert divers employed in the resorts of Costa Rica have a very different approach than the ones you will encounter in other parts of the world. For instance, instead of being stringent about not touching any marine animals, these experts especially look for peculiar sea creatures for the visitors to see. If they successfully find something, they often pass it on to the other divers to examine closely. You will find a variety of sea animals ranging from seahorses and octopuses, to eels and frogfish. The experts employed here go a long way in ensuring that the divers have a comprehensive experience of the waters and the creatures in it.

There are also some large marine animals like sea turtles, white tip sharks and even cow-nose rays. You are sure to have an experience of a lifetime in the waters of Costa Rica. Even though you will not be able to see very clearly through the water, it is definitely worth a visit because of the variety of sea animals you get to observe. The diving is also relatively cheaper than that in other popular locations, and you can also enjoy other activities.
