Costa Rica is known for its diverse wildlife and among the millions of species of fauna, Humpback Whales are one of the favorite species of people who travel from all over the globe to observe them. Humpback Whales belong to a family Megapterinae, a subfamily of Balaenopteridae. The whales are said to be acrobats and can be seen breaching and slapping the water. They are considered one of the largest cetaceans. Their bodies are round with a distinctive knobbly head and long pectoral fins. Due to their awesome acrobatic moves, people found them quite interesting to watch. They breach and lunge out of the water in a very high speed and then smash back into their azure world. It’s an amazing sight to witness! The whales are known to form gatherings near the coasts and used to be easy prey for whale-hunters. Since 1964, they are officially acknowledged as protected species. Humpback Whales are found in every other ocean, from polar to tropical waters. In the winters, they migrate from the poles to the warmer, tropical waters of the sea. Humpback whales can be sighted everywhere else in the waters of Atlantic and Pacific Coasts during the sultry summer time. From the colder waters of California, these whales travel to water of Isla de Cano, Osa Peninsula, Isla Ballena and Golfo Dulce. They come here after breeding season to give birth to the calves.
Humpback whales come to Costa Rica for a long time and the waters of the Pacific Coast are packed with them! Also, there are several places to view them. The Osa Peninsula is said to be one of the most biologically multifarious regions in the world. The oceanic water is flourishing with cetaceans, especially Humpback whales during January and February and thousands of people come to enjoy the spectacular sight annually. The Dome is situated on southern side of Pacific Coast and is abundant with dolphins, whales and other marine creatures. For watching a “pod” of whales, a trip to The Dome is must! Ballena Marine National Park to Drake Bay is yet another great place to view the whales. The whale refuge is located between Dominical and Coronado by the southern Pacific coast. Not only tourists are treated with the views of whales, hundreds of rare and mystical sea creatures can also be seen!
