Blue Whale in Costa Rica
October 30th, 2012
Costa Rica is a very small country which is located in Central America. The rainforests, exotic beaches and bright colors continue to bring travelers for a visit. Costa Rica is also known as one of the best places in the world for scuba diving. Costa Rica is located with the Pacific Ocean to its western side and the Caribbean Ocean on the eastern end making it a fantastic duo dynamic adventure for divers.
Scuba Divers can actually enter the waters from the beaches, but boat rentals are also available for the more difficult locations. There are tour operators that will take a diving group out on a boat to a specific location offering packages and equipment for the new diver or those that could not travel with their own. Tours are even offered on overnight trips to see the marine life at night and explore the depths with the moonlight as a guide. The scuba diving tours being offered are safe and enjoyable for your Costa Rica scuba experience.
The town of Cahuita is located on the more tropical and exotic side of Costa Rica and is a small town. It is a calming paradise for the tired traveler. This destination has three beautiful sandy beaches, one with exotic black sand and the water is warm and calm. The area is home to the Cahuita National Park which is a very popular area known for its magical rain forests and beautiful coral reefs. The town is so small that it only offers five roads that lead to the water and neighboring town. This national park is very important to Costa Rica and was created to keep the plants, coral reefs and marine life protected. For the traveler that wishes to spend a quiet day on land there are many trails that will take you through this lush tropical forest. There is a butterfly garden near where time can be spent watching the butterflies in all colors floating around. For the water goer the coral reefs and marine life offer great views in the crystal blue waters off Cahuita’ s Reef.
Divers traveling to Costa Rica’s Cahuita Reef know that they are about to discover an underwater paradise in the crystal blue warm waters. This reef extends out in a fan shape and close by there are even two shipwrecks laying on the sea floor below to explore while scuba diving. The reef is home to a large variety of fish, lobsters and clams, and plant life. The reef is close to the shore line off Cahuita Point. At this dive site divers will have the chance to see some of the most interesting coral, like the brain or staghorn corals. The staghorn corals are very delicate and seem to form more in the calm waters, while the stronger brain corals can handle a stronger wave atmosphere.
The reef starts about 500 meters from the beach off Cahuita Point. Heavy rains can make the water visibility muddy due to the runoff from the rivers. The best time to go scuba diving is March through May and then again from August through November. Of course nature has its own timing so the water quality can still change daily. Visibility ranges from twenty to seventy feet and the water temperature stays right around eighty degrees. During the low visibility period a diver will still have the pleasure of seeing rays and sharks because the water brings more nutrients and fish for the sharks delight.
The marine life seen swimming around these parts is typically Eagle Rays, sharks, and billfish and during the right seasons even a whale. The underwater adventures continue with visits from giant manta rays, the curious dolphin and spiny puffer fish. Parrotfish, angelfish, jack, triggerfish and snapper are some of the fish types that a diver will see in these waters. These waters are home to many species of fish, marine life, and corals but diving these waters still needs to be done by those with experience and certification. It is a great location for the inexperienced diver to learn and most dive centers in the area will offer courses and equipment to teach someone how to dive.
Diving in the Caribbean in the majestic blue warm waters is a diver’s paradise. There is a magical attraction that has brought divers from around the world to these waters for many years. Scuba diving in these waters is the closest thing that we can achieve to flight. While in the magnificent waters in the Caribbean a diver can dive up or plunge down low, even drift upside down while watching a show of a school of fish form a tornado action in the water. There is a total calm and freeness to a dive. This can be a very relaxing get away for anyone needing a quick escape.

Good info, well written and informative, thank you. However, the picture of the lion fish, an invasive species to the Carib that is eating its way thru the ecosystem, undercuts your article somewhat. Just thought you'd want to know.
